If you have never used a vehicle transport service before, you may feel a bit unsure about what exactly happens on collection day. Knowing the basic steps can make the whole process much more relaxed.
This guide explains what to expect when a car transporter or motorbike delivery van arrives to collect your vehicle.
Before the truck arrives
A day or a few hours before collection, you will usually receive:
- A message or call with an estimated time of arrival
- The driver name and contact number
- A reminder to have keys and documents ready
This is a good moment to move other cars, clear space on the driveway and remove any last personal items from the vehicle.
Step 1 – Driver arrival and introduction
When the truck or van arrives:
- The driver will park in a safe position near your address
- They will introduce themselves and confirm which vehicle they are collecting
- They may confirm the delivery address and contact details with you
Feel free to ask any questions about the route or delivery time at this stage.
Step 2 – Vehicle inspection and photos
Before loading, the driver will normally:
- Walk around the vehicle with you
- Note any visible damage such as scratches or dents
- Take photos of each side of the car or bike
This inspection protects both sides by creating a record of the condition at collection.
Step 3 – Checking basics for loading
To load the vehicle safely, the driver may check:
- That the steering works
- That the brakes work at least partly
- Whether the car starts and drives, or needs winching
- Ground clearance and any low bumpers or body kits
If the vehicle is a non runner, they will plan how to use the winch and ramps to load it.
Step 4 – Loading the vehicle
The exact method depends on the equipment, but usually the driver will:
- Position the truck or trailer correctly for loading
- Lower the bed or set up ramps
- Drive, roll or winch the vehicle onto the bed
- Center the vehicle and apply the handbrake
For motorbikes, they will place the bike in a wheel chock, then use straps to secure it upright.
Step 5 – Securing the vehicle for transport
Once the vehicle is in position, the driver will:
- Use wheel straps to secure each wheel to the bed
- Add extra straps if needed for certain vehicles
- Check that the vehicle cannot move forward, backward or side to side
This is an important safety step, so it can take a few minutes. It is normal and necessary.
Step 6 – Handover and paperwork
When everything is secure, the driver will usually:
- Ask you to sign a collection or handover form
- Confirm that they have the keys and any documents agreed with the buyer
- Give you an estimated delivery window if you are also the receiver
If you are the seller, this is normally the final step in the physical handover of the vehicle.
Step 7 – Departure and route
After leaving your address, the driver will follow the planned route to the delivery location. Professional vehicle transport companies keep in contact with the buyer or receiver and give updates if there are delays.
You may also receive a message when the vehicle has been delivered.
How to make collection day go smoothly
You can help the whole process by:
- Being available and keeping your phone on
- Preparing the vehicle and documents in advance
- Ensuring safe access and enough space for the truck
- Asking any questions you have before loading begins
With these simple steps, collection day becomes a calm and predictable part of using a vehicle transport service in the UK.
